The Convention on Wetlands is the intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources, adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971 and came into force in 1975. These 7 Ramsar Sites, covering 67,586 ha, have been designated as internationally important and work is ongoing to ensure their effective management.
List of seven wetlands recognised as RAMSAR sites in New Zealand:
1) Whangamarino - Waikato Region* (5923 ha)
2) Kopuatai Peat Dome - Waikato Region* (10,201 ha)
3) Farewell Spit - Tasman Region (11,388 ha)
4) Wairarapa Moana Wetland - Greater Wellington Region (10,547 ha)
5) Firth of Thames - Waikato Region (8.,927 ha)
6) Manawatū River Mouth and Estuary - Manawatū / Whanganui Region (600 ha) 7) Awarua Wetland - Southland Region (20,000 ha)
