Fisheries closures can be classified as a Type 2 Marine Protected Areas, if they provide sufficient protection from the adverse effects of fishing to meet the MPA Protection Standard (Ministry of Fisheries and Department of Conservation, 2008). These Type 2 fisheries closures are located next to other protected areas or reserves and all of them heavily restrict or ban use of mobile fishing gears that damage benthic habitats. Fishery closures include: Paterson Inlet; Pukerua Bay; Moutere Hauriri/Bounty Islands and Motu Ihupuku/Campbell Island; Punakaiki North, Punakaiki South and Hautai. In Paterson Inlet, trawling, Danish seine and commercial and amateur dredging are prohibited. In Pukerua Bay, it is forbidden to take shellfish, aquatic life, seaweed and fish except by hand-held lines. In Moutere Hauriri/Bounty Islands and Motu Ihupuku/Campbell Island, bottom trawling, Danish seining and dredging are prohibited. In Punakaiki North, Punakaiki South and Hautai, mobile, bottom-impacting commercial fishing methods including bottom trawling, Danish seining and dredging, are prohibited.
