Depending on the illumination direction, azimuth, and degree of vertical exaggeration, hillshades can be used to highlight subtle geomorphology and seafloor features. </SPAN></SPAN></P><P STYLE="margin:0 0 11 0;"><SPAN>These data present a modelled multi-directional hillshade derived from the bathymetric elevation model (50 cm resolution) of the HS52 - Approaches to Auckland survey area. Survey HS52 was undertaken by Discovery Marine Limited (DML) on behalf of Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) for hydrographic charting purposes.</SPAN></P><P STYLE="margin:0 0 11 0;"><SPAN>Compared to traditional hillshades which are illuminated from a single source point only, a multi-directional hillshade is illuminated from 6 separate directions simultaneously, resulting in a more 'natural' expression of terrain.
