<DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>General Statistical Areas</SPAN><SPAN> </SPAN></P><P><SPAN STYLE="font-weight:bold;">[*** Dataset has been downloaded in June 2023 from the MPI OpenData Portal https://data-mpi.opendata.arcgis.com/datasets/MPI::general-statistical-areas/about for importing into NIWAGIS ***]</SPAN></P><P><SPAN>Legal definitions for statistical areas (001 to 052) were sourced from the legally authoritative definition given on Map 9: General Statistical Areas. The boundaries for statistical areas 005, 006, 007, 009H, 043 and 044 are defined in the Fisheries (Auckland and Kermadec areas commercial fishing) Regulations, 1986. Ambiguity exists as to the precise nature of the boundary between statistical areas 016 and 017 through Cook Strait. This boundary has been drawn following the boundary depicted on Map 9.The boundaries for statistical areas 091 to 801 are defined in the map “Proposed Statistical Areas for New Zealand EEZ”, created in December, 1989. Ambiguity exists with regards to the diagonal boundaries forming parts of statistical areas 101, 302, 303, 504, 603, 604, 605, 606, 701 and 801. These parts of the boundaries have been constructed according to the Fisheries Management Area (FMA) boundaries listed in Schedule 1 of the Fisheries Act 1989, with special consideration to Note 4; Mercator 41 was the projection system used to create these lines.All boundaries have been generalised where they reach the coastline.The outer New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) boundary used to created these statistical areas was sourced from Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).All boundaries have been generalised inland where they reach the coastline. An authoritative coastal boundary of these statistical areas is dependent on the &quot;mean high water mark&quot;. An accurate digital version of the mean high water mark for New Zealand does not exist at this stage. This information layer is considered reasonably accurate but not authoritative.The outer New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) boundary used to created these statistical areas was sourced from Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>
This dataset contains the seven Fisheries Statistical Areas:
General (Inshore), General, Freshwater Eel, Oyster, Paua, Rock Lobster and Scallop.
The OYU5 (Foveaux Strait) Fishery Grid and Sub-statistical areas for freshwater eels are also present.

General Statistical are aligned to authoritative Exclusive Economic Zone and Fisheries Management Area boundaries, as well as legislated coordinates where applicable. Freshwater Eel, Oyster, Paua, Rock Lobster and Scallop statistical areas boundaries are mapped using approximated landmarks and are considered reasonably accurate but not authoritative.

General Statistical Area boundaries were updated in 2019 to align with EEZ, FMA and legislated coordinates. The updated general statistical area boundaries have been approved by NIWA (Principal Technician - Marine Geology)
All other area types are based on old boundaries used in NABIS. These boundaries appear to be based on named landmarks but have unknown lineage.
