New Zealand generally experiences semi-diurnal tides, usually with 2 high and 2 low tides per day of varying heights. High and low tides are generally 6 hours apart and nearly an hour delayed from one day to the next, though due to New Zealand’s unique water flow patterns and contours underwater and along coasts, there are several exceptions. The strongest tidal currents are found in the Cook Strait. Additional details of local tidal variations can be found here: https://www.linz.govt.nz/guidance/marine-information/tides/tides-around-new-zealand. Currents including tidal current are important in the suspension and movement of sediments, plankton and organic materials and thereby play a key role in determining the composition of the seafloor substrate and ecological communities in areas influenced by these flows. Maximum depth-averaged (NZ bathymetry) water flows from tidal currents (m/s) were calculated from a tidal model for New Zealand waters (Walters et al., 2001) at 250 m resolution. A moving real-time visualization of tidal currents and other currents around New Zealand can be viewed here: https://www.windy.com/-Show---add-more-layers/overlays?currentsTide,-37.736,175.898,6

",
