Service Description:

Classified as Type 2 Marine Protected Areas, Submarine cable and pipeline protection zones (CPZs) provide sufficient protection from the adverse effects of fishing to meet the MPA Protection Standard in New Zealand (Ministry of Fisheries and Department of Conservation 2008). CPZs are regions where fishing and anchoring are illegal due to the potential damage they may cause to submarine cables and pipelines which carry vital communications and energy resources and are continually patrolled by ship and helicopter. They are established under the Submarine Cables and Pipelines Protection Act 1996, administered by the Ministry of Transport. The following cable closures meet the protection standard for Type 2 MPAs: Cook Strait Submarine Cable Closure: Oaonui Submarine Cable Closure, Whangaparāoa Peninsula Submarine Cable Closure, Hauraki Gulf Submarine Cable Closure, Pohokura Submarine Cable Closure, Kawau Island Submarine Cable Closure, Great Barrier Island Submarine Cable Closure, Muriwai Beach Submarine Cable Closure. https://hub.arcgis.com/datasets/MPI::submarine-cables-and-pipelines-protection/about
