Net_primary_production_by_VGP_model (MapServer)

View In:   ArcGIS JavaScript   NIWA ArcGIS Enterprise Map Viewer   ArcGIS Earth   ArcGIS Pro

Service Description:

Net primary productivity indicates the difference between the rate of photosynthesis and the rate of respiration and represents the rate of energy storage by primary producers (primarily phytoplankton) in surface waters. This indicates the amount of energy available to other organisms in the ecosystem. This model uses chlorophyll-a, available light, and temperature information to incorporate photosynthetic efficiency. The daily production of organic matter (mgC/m2/d) by the growth of phytoplankton in the surface mixed layer, net of phytoplankton respiration, was estimated at monthly resolution based on satellite observations of Chlrorophyll-a (Chl-a), Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) and Sea Surface Temperature (SST), using the vertically-generalised production model (Behrenfeld & Falkowski, 1997). Resolution is at 9 km.
