Hillshades represent an illuminated modelled surface derived from an elevation model. Depending on the illumination direction, azimuth, and degree of vertical exaggeration, hillshades can be used to highlight subtle geomorphology and seafloor features.
These data present a modelled multi-directional hillshade derived from the bathymetric elevation model (1 m resolution) of the HS53 - Kawau Island survey area. Survey HS53 was undertaken by Discovery Marine Limited (DML) on behalf of Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) for hydrographic charting purposes.
Compared to traditional hillshades which are illuminated from a single source point only, a multi-directional hillshade is illuminated from 6 separate directions simultaneously, resulting in a more 'natural' expression of terrain. This hillshade has been vertically exaggerated by a factor of 3, resulting in greater expression of more subtle geomorphology.

",
