As a part of Benthic Terrain Modelling (BTM), the ability to constrain variations in seafloor substrate is of great benefit. During processing of multibeam bathymetry data, it may be possible to extract the strength of the return backscatter signal from isonified seafloor (in decibels), in conjunction with regular constraints of seafloor depth. These processed backscatter grids can be used to constrain relative changes in seabed substrate across the survey area.

As backscatter strength is directly linked to the strength of the output signal, if acquisition parameters change throughout the survey then this can have an impact on the output backscatter grid.

These data present a processed backscatter grid (1 m resolution) of the region surveyed during hydrographic survey HS54 - Tamaki Strait. Survey HS54 was undertaken by iXSurvey (now iXBlue) on behalf of Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) for hydrographic charting purposes. This grid has been subsequently reprocessed by Taihoro Nukurangi - NIWA to undertake BTM analysis.

These data present a processed backscatter grid (1 m resolution) of the region surveyed during iXSurvey (now iXBlue) hydrographic survey HS54 - Tamaki Strait.
HS54 Backscatter (1 m)
NIWA", "Taihoro Nukurangi", "LINZ", "Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau", "Auckland Council", "HS54", "Tamaki Strait", "BTM", "Backscatter", "Bathymetry
Survey HS54 undertaken by iXSurvey (now iXBlue ltd.)
Raw data provided by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ)
Backscatter processed by National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA)
Data processed on behalf of Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland Council
